Episode 3 of the ‘Re-routing the City’ podcast delves into the role of technology in designing accessibility into the built world
The final episode in the three-part series discusses the research and developments that could help reroute our urban spaces to be more accessible and enjoyable for the people using them.

What does an accessible city look like? From reliable and effective public transport systems to places with no architectural barriers, cities around the world are increasingly striving to adapt their infrastructure and services for people of all backgrounds and abilities.

Currently the built world is rarely designed well enough for people with physical, cognitive or intellectual disabilities. Leaving our cities difficult to navigate, unwelcoming, and potentially dangerous for large parts of the population. What can be done to make moving around more inclusive for everyone? From people with dyslexia to those with dementia, wheelchair users to the visually impaired.

Episode 3 of the Applied + Disegno Re-routing the City podcast is titled ‘Moving in Inclusive Directions’ and is available to listen to now through Disegno's website, Spotify and Apple Podcasts. This final episode in the podcast trilogy features host India Block alongside Applied’s Digital Creative Director Ruth Ross-Macdonald. They are joined by expert guest Dom Hyams who is Head of Strategy at Purple Goat Agency – the world's only disability-focused marketing agency. Dom passionately looks to educate on diversity, inclusion and accessibility. He integrates his disability knowledge and lived-experience into all aspects of his work.

The trio consider how, as our cities become smarter, new navigation technologies can create opportunities to improve and prioritise mobility for all. From the development of captioning software to help people with ADHD and dyslexia, to the process of user testing to help develop a map to make Central Park’s undulating terrain more accessible for everyone. The discussion seeks to understand the process of inclusive design. And how, as a society, we can do this better.
