description

We are looking for a professional transportation or city planner with an interest in design to be a technical representative for Applied on the West Coast.

You may be looking for a new way to use your municipal or regional government experience without the long process of internal promotion. Ideally you will have experience in advancing transportation or city projects through planning, definition and specific processes such as code compliance and permitting.  Importantly, you will believe in the roles of soft engineering, design and information to make the experience of cities more attractive and accessible.

We are an established, award-winning, multi-disciplinary consultancy that designs the interactions between people and the built environment. We offer a career in an important and immersive field at the intersection of design and planning with clients that represent household names around the world.

This exciting mid-level role will be part of our international team of diversely experienced planners delivering projects to a wide range of famous clients. It will also form part of our growing presence in the US and on the West Coast.

About the role

You will represent Applied as one of our technical experts in the broad field of information planning. Working with our international team of planners and designers, this position is intrinsic to our approach and includes researching, developing strategies and producing detailed guidelines for systems of information. These systems are designed to assist navigation, interpretation and interaction with places ranging from buildings and campuses to whole cities and regional transit networks. To provide this insight the role requires broad planning experience including movement analysis, travel behavior, the regulatory framework, and how public projects are planned, delivered and managed.

You will be joining our growing office in the Bay Area. We also operate flexible working arrangements and support home working. This role requires an ability to travel to clients across the US and internationally.

What we are looking for

We will select applicants based on merit including relevant experience, demonstrated ability, and commitment to the role. For this role we are specifically looking for people with:

  • Several years responsible experience of transportation or city planning preferably with some of this experience in a public sector role.
  • A bachelor’s degree in planning or a related field such as civil engineering, urban design or architecture. AICP membership is an advantage but not required.
  • We are a firm that is fully committed to advancing people and society and looking after the planet. Applied is currently working towards B-Corp certification. We are looking for people who share our perspective and have an active interest in the creative industries including architecture, urban design, digital or graphic design.
  • Record of achievement in planning, developing and delivering traffic, active transportation, transit or demand management projects.
  • Experience with planning and facilitating public or stakeholder engagement, or with directing market research, to support proposals.
  • Clear, concise and accurate report writing, an ability to prepare project proposals, and confident interpersonal and meeting management skills.
  • An advanced ability in industry standard text, messaging and spreadsheet software. The company uses Google Suite, Slack and Adobe Creative Suite. Experience with project management software such as MS Project or Merlin would also be an advantage.
  • Fluency in languages in addition to English is an advantage. Spanish speaking applicants are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applied is committed to creating a fair, representative and inclusive environment. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability or age.
