About the role:
This is an entry level position suitable for recent design graduates and those with under three years industry experience who are looking for an engaging role with the ability to grow within a prestigious design firm.Applied Information Group is a multinational design practice specializing in wayfinding for cities, transit systems, active mobility, healthcare, campuses and museums. Working within a multidisciplinary team in our San Francisco office, you will be involved in the successful delivery of environmental graphic design and wayfinding projects, both in the Bay Area and in partnership with Applied’s other offices in London, Vancouver and Seoul. You will collaborate with senior designers and planners on all aspects of the design process from user research, through strategy and concept, to detailed design and implementation.
Typical tasks in this role include:
- Assisting in research into user behavior and project context
- Conducting site visits and analysis
- Assisting in the visualization and iteration of design ideas and concepts
- Supporting testing of designs through prototyping and user engagement
- Assisting in design of presentation materials and project documentation
- Development of high-quality graphic and information design elements and layouts (cartographic elements, diagrams and pictograms, etc.)
- Creation of production-ready artworks and specification for signage, maps, diagrams and digital displays
- Attendance of meetings with clients and project partners (architects, landscape designers, fabricators, etc.)
- Travel as appropriate and necessary
Who we are looking for a candidate with:
- 1-3 years of experience in Experiential / Environmental Graphic Design, Graphic Design, Wayfinding, Urban Design, Architecture or related industry
- A portfolio that demonstrates graphic and typographic skills, and your dedication to the craft of your final designs
- Ability to talk and write articulately about your decision making and the developmental work behind your designs, and to work collaboratively to ideate, visualize and iterate strong design concepts as part of a project team
- A keen graphic eye and ambition to deliver projects of the highest quality
- A passion for creating user centered, empathetic design solutions
- Proficiency in using Adobe Creative Suite (primarily Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop)
- Ability to use Google Suite (primarily Slides, Docs, Sheets)
The following skills are not essential but advantageous:
- Experience creating city, transit, campus, and/or building maps and diagrams
- Knowledge of GIS software, such as QGIS, and use of georeferenced information through the MAPublisher plug-in for Adobe Illustrator
- Working knowledge of 3D CAD software such as Vectorworks, and rendering software such as KeyShot
- Prior use of Revit or other BIM software tools
- Experience using Figma or other UX/UI tools
- Familiarity with ADA, MUTCD, and other regulatory standards related to signage and displayed information
- Experience of industrial / product design for wayfinding signage, including the drafting of design intent drawings and specifications
- Experience designing or incorporating non-visual communication elements into designs, products, or experiences
- Experience working with fabricators
- Fluency in a language other than English
